A Day in the Life of the Director of Student Development and Activities

There hasn’t been a day since I started work as Director of Student Development and Activities that has been the same as the next. It is simultaneously the best and most frustrating part of the job: I never really know what to expect. This  Wednesday was typical of the chaos of the position but, more importantly, I believe it illustrates the variety of passionate student groups that make every day worth it.

8:45am – 11am: University Visiting Day, Lower College Hall

I started Wednesday by setting up the Students’ Association stall as part of the University’s Visiting Day. I occasionally get opportunities like this to represent the Association and the vast array of student activities we have to offer to prospective students. As a former Student Ambassador I had a great time getting back into Visiting Days again!

11am – 12:30pm: On the Rocks Meeting, Costa

Following a morning at the University, I darted through the rain to catch my next appointment – a meeting with Cameron Kirby, Director of On the Rocks. On the Rocks is our major student art festival in April, showcasing drama, visual art, music and more. It is also one of our Association Projects, a new scheme that falls under the DoSDA remit.

SocietiesLogoPrint3 (1)1 – 2pm: Board of Ten, Committee Room

Next up was my first subcommittee meeting of the day. The Union Debating Society is one of our oldest and largest student groups and also one of the ten Union subcommittees known as the Board of Ten. In this meeting they selected a first-year representative and prepared for their Economics public debate on Thursday before moving on to training.

2 – 4:30pm: Societies Training, Committee Room/Venue 1

Next up was President, Treasurer and Health & Safety training for a selection of our 150+ affiliated societies. This training is led by our student Societies Committee and is a central part of ensuring that students have the best tools to run their society.

6 – 7pm: Music is Love, Committee Room

Back to the Committee Room, I had my final subcommittee meeting of the day with Music is Love, a collective of St Andrews based individuals passionate about showcasing quality music. Fresh from a very successful electro night in Venue 1, they are already preparing for Meursault, their next large gig. Alongside this they are helping with a Nightline event, holding weekly jam sessions and working on a re-branding strategy.

7 – 8pm: RAG Week Meeting, Main BarMy last meeting of the day takes place over cocktails in the Main Bar. Daniel, Director of Events and Services, and I meet up with Fiona and Courtney, Coordinator and Vice-Coordinator of Raising and Giving (RAG) Week. Daniel and I both love RAG, as former Entertainment (Ents) Convenor and former RAG Week Coordinator, and are so happy to see how it has grown.

This day, like most of the ones I have in the Union, was spent dashing from group to group. It is a central part of the job to ‘wear many hats’ and be so many things something which is challenging, but incredibly rewarding. I only have one year to work with these groups and help them along the way – I can’t wait to see what they have in store!

The Student Association building, where many of these societies meet to plan their activities, is currently under redevelopment, transforming the old building to meet the needs of the newer generation of students. The redevelopment includes: state-of-the-art media suite, a café, new society rooms, multiple events venues including a 400-seat theatre, and two rehearsal rooms on the top floor.
